Jho — owner & baker

I’m a self-taught baker who quit corporate to pursue their passion. Baking has always been something that I love and brings me so much happiness. In 2019, I made a decision to start my own small business while still working a corporate 9 to 5 job. After things had settled with COVID, I quit my job and pursued multiple opportunities as a baker. When I realized that I could share happiness with others through food/desserts I knew it was something I needed to do. As a person that struggles with their mental health, Akio’s Bakery is not only a way for me to bring joy to others but also a way for me to bring joy to myself. I hope to open my own brick and mortar, to create a space that welcomes and supports the community, and to inspire others to pursue passions too.

Akio — Good boy

Akio is my pug! I got him when he was just a puppy in 2017. During that time, I was struggling with my mental health and was on the verge of giving up. The moment I saw his picture online something told me I needed to get him, like a little light in the dark. Getting him was one of the best things that happened to me. He connects me to the world and keeps me grounded, he gave me a reason to keep going. Like dogs do, they love unconditionally. Akio, just like baking, brings me so much joy and happiness.

Pastries — cream puffs & More

I started with making just making cream puffs. The style of cream puffs I make are called choux au craquelin, they are a cream puff with a crispy cookie top. I first had this type of pastry when I was visiting Japan. It was creamy, light, and crispy. When I came back home, I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I decided to learn how to make them. I shared them with my friends and family, they all loved them and encouraged me to sell them. Now the menu has expanded a little and the business has become more than just cream puffs. The menu includes items that are mainly inspired by Japanese baked goods and often times with a Fil-Am twist to them. I grew up eating all kinds of Asian cuisine which influences the things that I like to make.
